2016 Bash

To celebrate students’ love for reading, Atlanta Public Schools’ Dunbar Elementary held a Storybook Character Parade. The parade started at the Dunbar Recreation Center and ended at the school.

Dunbar students, parents, staff and members of the community were invited to dress as a character from their favorite book, and bring the book to participate in the parade. Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School’s Marching Jaguars also participated.

During the parade, students received books along the parade route that were donated to the school by community partners.

  • Itty-Bitty Kids with a Super Duper Future

    When I walked into Ms. Cannady’s kindergarten class this week, the 5 year olds were engaged in a lesson about living and non-living things. “This is how we GROW” Ms. Cannady said, as she and the group stretched their arms to the ceiling. The kids were stretching, they were answering questions, they were EXCITED to be learning. Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary, located in Mechanicsville, is a school of 384 students....

  • Parents’ Right To Know

    Dear APS Parents and Guardians:

    All schools are required by federal law under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965(ESEA), to let you know about your child’s teachers’ qualifications.  We want you to know that it is your right to request the following information about your child’s teachers’ training and credentials:

    • Whether the teacher met the state requirements from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for certification for the grade level and subject area which they teach;
    • Whether the teacher is teaching under an emergency or other temporary status through which Georgia qualification or certification criteria have been waived;
    • What undergraduate or graduate degree(s) the teacher holds; including graduate certificates and additional degrees, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration; and whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals, and if so, their qualifications.

    Please know that the staff at your child’s school is committed to helping your child reach his or her highest academic potential throughout their school career.  That commitment includes making sure that all of our teachers and paraprofessionals are highly skilled and are providing quality instruction to your child.

    If you wish to request information concerning your child’s teachers’ qualifications, please contact your child’s principal, by phone or email, using the information provided on your school’s website.

  • The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students who are 18 years of age or older ("eligible students") certain rights with respect to the student's education records.  These rights include the right to provide written consent before the school discloses personally identifiable information (PII) from the student's education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent.

    One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests.  A school official is a person employed by the school as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel) or a person serving on the school board.  A school official also may include a volunteer or contractor outside of the school who performs an institutional service of function for which the school would otherwise use its own employees and who is under the direct control of the school with respect to the use and maintenance of PII from education records, such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist; a parent or student volunteering to serve on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee; or a parent, student, or other volunteer assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks.  A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.

    Also, upon request, the school discloses education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll, or is already enrolled if the disclosure is for purposes of the student’s enrollment or transfer.

    For more information about Student Records and disclosures, including directory information, please refer to the Student Handbook, and Board Policy JR and Administrative Regulation JR-1(R).
