Perkerson Elementary School

A Dual Immersion School

Perkerson Elementary is a Dual Immersion School (Spanish-English).

Language immersion is an educational approach in which students are taught the curriculum content through the medium of a second language. In this way, immersion students not only learn the content, but also gain knowledge of the language in which it is taught.

Dual immersion offers a rich bilingual experience for young learners when their minds are developmentally best able to acquire a second language.

Instruction is divided between two high quality, creative classrooms: one English, one Spanish.

Students enjoy the advantage of two caring, qualified teachers. The English-speaking teacher uses half of the instruction day to teach English language arts (reading, writing, and spelling) as well as other subjects of the curriculum (science, social studies, math, etc.).

The Spanish-speaking teacher uses the other half of the day to teach Spanish Literacy, Math, and portions of social studies, art, science topics from the grade-appropriate level of the curriculum based on the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards.

In class, the Spanish teacher speaks only in Spanish and communicates using a range of engaging strategies including pictures, songs, games, body language, expressions, drama, pantomime, etc. Children at this age are adept at picking up language in meaningful contexts. After a brief period at the beginning of the year, students too will speak only in Spanish during Spanish class.

The Dual Immersion program seeks to enroll students of varying backgrounds and all abilities. Applications are open to all students entering Kindergarten.

The goals of the one-way Spanish Immersion Program are:

  • To promote high academic achievement for all students
  • To develop first and second language skills for bilingualism and bi-literacy
  • To promote cross–‐cultural understanding for all students

As part of Perkerson’s reinvention, the school will begin its Spanish Immersion program in 2013-2014.  With such an intense interest in dual immersion, the school will accept both in-boundary and out-of-boundary families.  Beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, the program will serve approximately 34 children by hosting 2 kindergarten classes.  Each class will not exceed 17 students.  APS has pledged its support of the program and plans to add one grade level each year up to 5th grade.

The immersion model at Perkerson is as follows:

  • Kindergarten: 50% Spanish and 50% English with Specials (Art, Science, P.E., Media) in English.
  • K through 5th grade: 50% Spanish and 50% English (Specials in English) in the subsequent years.
  • Class size will not exceed 17 students.
  • In Kindergarten, all regular classroom content will be taught in Spanish.
  • All students will receive the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and essential curriculum, as decided by Georgia State.
  • The goal is for students to be bilingual and bi-literate by the end of their 5th grade year.
  • All students who attend Perkerson are eligible to participate in the program.  Selection will be made through an application process.
