SCHOOL YEAR 2015-2016
SCHOOL CHOICE APPLICATION PERIOD
MARCH 7 - MARCH 27
The 2015-2016 school choice applications will be posted on the website and the online portal will open on March 7, 2015.
Georgia’s Public School Choice law allows residents of the City of Atlanta to attend a public school outside of their zoned school if space is available. Those that live outside of the City of Atlanta may apply to attend an Atlanta Public School if space is available and with the payment of non-resident tuition. Atlanta Public Schools offers two types of transfers:
- General Administrative Transfers – permits a student to attend an out of zone school until the highest grade of the school. Approval is subject to space availability at the requested school.
- Georgia Special Needs Scholarship Transfers – permits eligible special education students to request a transfer to another APS school on the basis of special needs. Approval is subject to space availability at the requested school.
How many schools can I select on my application?
Parents will be able to select three school choices and will rank their choices in order of preference.

Spaces for Transfers
General administrative transfers are granted based upon space availability. If
the number of applications for a given school exceeds the number of available
spaces, a random lottery will be conducted to provide each interested student
with an equal opportunity to be admitted. Applications must be submitted in
person. Applications will be assigned a lottery identification number which
will be used to randomly select approvals for transfers should the number of
applicants surpass the number of available seats at a particular school.
Transportation under public school choice option is the responsibility of the parent.
A general administrative transfer is valid through the highest grade of the school for which the transfer is approved. A transfer does not grant students the right to attend the next school in the feeder pattern. The granting of a transfer for one child under school choice does not ensure approval of siblings for current or future school years.
