Me and My Father
Welcome to Mrs. Watkins' Class,
For those of you who don't already know me, I'd like to take this opportunity to formally introduce myself. My name is Indira Watkins and I'm your child's First Grade Teacher! I am graudated of Georgia State University with a BS in Journalism. I also have a Masters in Elementary Education. I recently finished my Ed.S in Curriculum and Instruction, as well as, my Reading Endorsement. This is my fourth year at Adamsville Primary.
My goal is to have children enjoy school, become more responsible and learn to work more independently, relying on their learned skills to grow socially and academically. I understand that many parents today lead very busy lives. However, working together will allow both of us to maximize your child's educational time in First Grade.
Communication between home and school is extremely important. We all want the best for your child. In order to achieve this goal I will begin to send home a daily communicator folder. You will need to go through it every night, as it will contain notes from the school office, and a daily behavior report. There will also be nights when I will include extra practice for items in math and reading.

Everything your child experiences at school will not fully develop without your 100% support at home. Each Monday, your child will be given a homework packet that will include a homework chart that will break down the homework for each day. Homework will include Math, Spelling, Language Arts, and Science or Social Studies. I will be checking homework every Friday. Incomplete homework will result in a "0".
REMEMBER THAT HOMEWORK IS FACTORED INTO YOUR CHILD'S GRADE EACH WEEK.
Weekly homework packets will also contain a weekly reading log. It is to be completely filled out and return with the packet on Friday Mornings. List books you read to your child, books you read together, and books your child read to you. Library books may be listed on this weeklu reading log as well as favorite books from home. Extensive research hasbeen done for many years on why some children have difficulty learning to read. Onem common thread throughout all reading research is that THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH DIFFICULTY IN READING IS....NOT READING! So cuddle up each night and read those books together! Fluency is our goal by the end of the year. This means your child can not only read the book all the way through but they read with the proper speed and enunciation.
